GMail + Googgle Doc is improving but can be BETTER!

In this week, Gmail introduces some significant changes in terms of document viewing and creation by working together with Google Document. For example, you can now create a document from your email (this is a lab function, go to your setting, add the lab features, then it will appears in your Gmail account).

Also when your email has an attachment which is pdf format, Gmail now provides a better pdf view (last time they show you the pdf file in terms of text, with a lot of errors display, e.g. no image, and some space are missing) by opening the pdf attachment withi Google Document. So you get a nearly exact looking by using the desktop Acrobat reader. One screenshot example as follows:

However, I think these are not enough, there are some very important features need to be added:

1) Let us share the pdf file and display as webpage from Google Document, now when I write a blog, I can only put jpg, or gif (through Google Document), there is no way I can share a pdf file on my blog even I upload to Google Document. This is unlike gif file, where I can upload to Google Ducument, and published it in my blog.

2) Let us save the images or part of the attachments to Google Document, rather than the whole email.

I can't wait to see these useful features in Google Document!

You can now customize your Google search results

Do you know that you can adjust the ranking of google search results? You can also omit or add in url in the search results. This is what the new features of Google Search Wiki provided if you login your google account when you do the search.

Basically, there are 5 main features:

1) You can move the ranking of your search results (no impact to other users).

2) You can omit some url of your seach results (no impact to other users).

3) You can also add an url to your search results (no impact to other users).

4) You can add a note to the research results (others can see your note).

5) You can of course, see the notes of other users.

Customize your search results with your rankings, deletions, and notes — plus, see how other people using Google have tailored their searches. Please remember that your SearchWiki notes will be visible to other users, identified with your Google Account nickname.

Gmail let you send SMS and add Task for Free

Do you have a feeling that most of the things or services in the Internet are free, but not in the real world. You can call another PC using Skype for free, you can have a video chat for free. But when you back in real world, you will be charged for making a voice call or send a sms. A platform that bridge the two would be very attractive.

Skype already let you call any phone in the US for free, now Gmail let you send any sms and have a sms chat for free, unfortunately, this services is only for number registered in US (again only US). Take a look at the screen shot below from Gmail blog.

As mentioned in my previous posts, I would expect a greater integration between Google Calender with Gmail, now there is something, Gmail allows you to Add Task in Gmail, you can either create a new tast list like:

Or you can also add your mail to be a task....

I would suggest some of the additiona features:

1) add in the reminder service, so that we can set alarm, and an email or pop out windows will remind us to perform the task.

2) add in the follow up task, i.e. for every task, it can have multiple actions, say you have a meeting on Tue 2pm, then some followup action could be: submit the minute on Wed 10am, book the meeting for next meeting on Thu 11am, etc....

Once again, maybe I get used to Microsoft Outlook, but I think combine the task and calender into the Gmail will be great. And I will not hestitate to make Gmail for my official email.

Microsoft gives you cash back when you shop online with Live Search, better than Froogle

For the first time, I see something from Microsoft that is more serious and does a better job than Google. Remember the Froogle from Google, now no more Froogle, but called the : Google Product Search . And if you are going to buy something, you can use the Google Checkout. So the Google Product Search helps you to find and compare the prices, and when you are going to buy, you can use the Google Checkout to provide you a safe and secure transactions.

Now Microsoft comes out with this Cashback Live Search, so you not only search and compare prices, Microsoft gives you cash back (real cash, hard cash, money!) if you buy and product through Live Search. I did a quick comparisons on Canon EOS 40D, I searchin Google Product Search and filter those without Google Checkout, the lowest price for a new camear is $836, and MSN Live Cashback search is the same, but after cash back of 3% ($25), it becomes $811. Really a good bargain, seems like the Microsoft is serious is round.

Lets take a look at one example on the cashback Live Search: http://search.live.com/cashback?form=MEJAAG&publ=MSDR&crea=TEXT_Search_cashback_holiday_shopping_1x1

How cashback Live Search works?

1. Search

Search for cashback deals at Live Search cashback. Each time you click a Live Search cashback listing, you'll find great deals on the product you chose. Your results will clearly list the cashback savings you'll receive off the store price, and your final bottom-line price that includes tax and shipping costs.

2. Shop

Compare and sort products by the bottom-line price. Click the best deal to go to the store. Everything you buy during that store visit will be eligible for Live Search cashback. On your first time using Live Search cashback, we will ask you for an email address so we can tell you how to quickly set up your free cashback account.

3. Save

Keep saving money each time you use Live Search cashback. Every time you make a qualifying purchase, we'll send you an email to confirm your Live Search cashback savings. Usually 60 days after your purchase (although this time period may vary for some stores), and when your cashback account reaches a balance of at least $5, you can claim your cold, hard cash.

Yahoo version of Adsense - Yahoo Publisher Network

Exactly the same as adsense, Yahoo Publisher Network will simply display ads that are relevant to the content of your site and earn money from qualified clicks.

Apparently, now they reliase that the google model is correct. No matter how big you are, you still a small portion of the Internet. So should not limite your advertisement client to just your own websites. Just like Microsoft, do you want to advertise with Microsoft and expose to a limited number of Microsoft website such as Hotmail, Windows Live Messenger, and MSN webpage? Or you would like to advertise with Google, where your ads will appear every page that has the keywords you want.

Let's see if AOL deal with Yahoo can get through. I think this would be the best for Yahoo before their market share is further reduced. And in fact, Microsoft + Yahoo would be a stronger competitor to Google, compare with AOL + Yahoo.
